The job of basemen is to cover their bases and catch throws made by fielders to their assigned base, in order to get the base runners out.

Common Softball Terms

Rules and Regulations

second baseSecond Baseman

This player covers second base and is required to field any balls that come in that area.

first baseFirst Baseman

This player is positioned just beside first base and is assigned the task of fielding any balls that come in that area.

outfielderOutfielders (Left, Right, and Center)

These are players positioned on the outfield area, that is outside the diamond area. The first and most prominent among them being the fact that fast-pitch softball is similar to baseball in many ways, and the strategies and techniques applied in it are more or less along the lines of regular baseball. When the pitcher pitches ‘ball’ four times, the batter get to move on to first base.

bullet ballBase Runner – A batter who reaches a base safely is called a base runner.

bullet ballBases Loaded – When all the bases are occupied by runners, it’s called bases loaded.

bullet ballBullpen – The warmup area, usually just by the side of the playing area is called the bullpen.

bullet ballDugout – The area just by the side of the playing field, where the players from the offense team wait for their turn is called the dugout.

bullet ballDead Ball – When the ball is no longer in play, it is called dead ball.

bullet ballDiamond – The playing area of a softball field, as it is shaped like a diamond goes by this name.

bullet ballFoul Ball – Foul ball is called if the ball is hit into the foul territory on either side of the batter.

bullet ballHome Run – When the ball is hit out of the legal playing area, it is called a home run. Leading off the bases is not permitted under any circumstances.

Interference in play is when a player of either team intentionally obstructs the path of either the runner as he tries to get to a base or that of an opposing team player as he tries to gather the ball or effect an out.

If the fault is of the batter or baserunner, the guilty player is declared out and the other runners need to return to their previous bases.

In case the obstruction was caused by a defending team player, the opposing team player gets to reach the base that he would otherwise have covered without the obstruction.

shortstopShortstop

The shortstop is positioned between the second base and the third base. The area outside the diamond area is the outfield area.

The order in which the batters have been placed initially is the order in which they must bat throughout the 7 innings of the game.

A batter will be out if there are 3 strikes against him. He must stay at least one base behind him at all times.

The runner has to be on a base until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. All the pitches made by the pitcher must be underhand throws.

catcherCatcher

He stands behind the batter and attempts to catch the balls thrown to him by the pitcher. This players primary job is to field any balls that fall in this area.

third baseThird Baseman

This player is positioned just to the left of third base and covers that area. The game of softball is very similar to the game of baseball, hence there are a lot of similarities between softball and baseball rules.Similar to baseball, there are 9 players in each team. The following is a list of the positions occupied by players in the sport of softball.

pitcherPitcher

The pitcher throws the softball from the pitcher’s mound to the catcher. Their job is to catch fly balls, ground balls and line drives.

As mentioned earlier, there are 9 players on each side in the sport of softball. Softball rules and positions are very easy to understand. This number can actually vary between 9 and 12 (depending on the level of the league that the game is being played in), but in most cases there will be only 9 players on each side.

The field of play is divided into two main parts – the infield and the outfield.

The pitcher is required to pitch the ball from the pitcher’s mound which is located at the center of the diamond. A pitch is counted as a strike if the batter misses the ball completely and the catcher positioned behind the batter catches the ball.

A batter will also be deemed out if a high ball hit by him is caught by a player from the fielding team before it touches the ground (this is known as a fly ball).

Unlike baseball, the ball has to be pitched underhand in the sport of softball.

Before pitching the ball, both the pitcher’s hands must be on the ball.

The pitcher must keep both his feet firmly planted on the pitcher’s plate, and while pitching the ball, he must take one step forward.

Each base must be touched by a base runner in the correct order.

A base runner cannot pass another base runner who is in front of him. Slow-pitch softball is the more popular of the two, as its rules are relatively simpler, which makes it an ideal choice even for the rookies out there. In an official game there are a total of 7 innings.

There are 4 bases, and the distance between each base is 60 feet. All these together make soft-pitch softball the most played team sport in the United States.. The hit counts as one run.

bullet ballOffense – The batting team or any of its players are called offense.

bullet ballPlay Ball – This is the umpire’s call or commencing or resuming the game.

bullet ballSafe – When a base runner make it to a base without getting out, he is ‘safe’.

bullet ballStrike Out – When the batter misses the three balls in a row pitched within the strike zone, he ‘strikes out’.

Softball is a sport that is played by a large number of people across the United States. It was also an Olympic sport for women, but was dropped from the Olympic games in 1996. These rules and positions are very similar to those of baseball. He also attempts to catch the throws made by the fielders in order to get the base runner running towards the home plate out.

bullet ballBall – Any ball that is pitched outside the strike zone is called ball. (inside the infield area)

When both teams have finished batting, it is known as an inning. The relatively simple gameplay also makes it a favorite amongst kids looking to take up a new sport.

Fast-pitch Softball and Slow-pitch Softball

Although the rules and playing conditions for both these variants are almost identical, there are a few differences between fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball. These 4 bases are diamond-shaped and the area between the bases is known as the infield. The pitcher’s mound is located in the center of the diamond in the infield area. Over the years, softball has risen from being just a sport to a way of life for scores of Americans and people all over the globe. As opposed to both baseball and fast-pitch softball, slow-pitch softball employs underhanded pitching of the ball and also needs a smaller playing area

Baseball Betting – How to Bet on Baseball

Teresa R. Fabian

Teresa R. Fabian

Bettors often get themselves caught up in their excitement or frustrations. They experience a period of success or failure that ultimately leads them to stray from their proven systems and methods.
Teresa R. Fabian

Using the run line, however, we would see odds resembling:

The Padres, as the road team, will continue to bat all the way through the ninth inning even if they’re already ahead, or if the Padres take a one run lead in the top of the ninth, they’ll continue to swing away and try to add to their lead.

Smart bettors and professional gamblers will seldom give odds greater than -140 when betting on baseball and always look for a reason to bet the underdog. Even if the Royals lose by one run, those betting Kansas City on the run line will win their bet because of the 1.5 runs.

Baseball Betting – How to Bet on BaseballMany longtime sports bettors will say that baseball is the easiest of the major sports in which to show a profit, yet it’s one of the least wagered on sports around.

In the book “Sports Betting: A Winner’s Handbook” Jerry Patterson states, “More big scores have been made betting on baseball than any other proposition.”

For wagering purposes what happens in extra innings counts, both for totals and run line bets.

It’s also wise to consider the predicted amount of runs scored in a game when looking at the run line. On the regular money line we may see odds like:

Don’t worry, once you see it in action, it’s not nearly as confusing as it first sounds.

Kansas City Royals +165

Boston Red Sox -180

The most common assumption on why sports gamblers don’t wager on baseball is that they don’t know how. If you bet nothing but underdogs you can win less than half of your bets and still come out ahead in the long run.

Kansas City Royals +1.5 -125

Boston Red Sox -1.5 +105

Let’s use an example of the Royals playing at the Red Sox. The team that is favored on the money line will also be the favored team on the run line.

As a general rule, strikeout pitchers typically perform better in night games and may be solid under plays, while off-speed pitchers who don’t register too many strikeouts are usually good over plays when they are pitching in the daytime.

The Run Line The run line is essentially a combination of the point spread and the money line rolled into one.

As you remember from your reading on the money line, what this means is that Red Sox bettors are asked to risk $180 to win $100, while Royals bettors will risk $100 to win $165.

San Diego Padres -115

San Francisco Giants +105

7 Places to Find Inspiration for Crafting

Using our earlier game between the Padres and the Giants for total purposes, it’s quite possible we would see a totals proposition of:

By Allen Moody

But when betting with the run line, we would expect to see the same game looking closer to:.

San Diego Padres -1.5 +135

San Francisco Giants +1.5 -155

The first thing prospective baseball bettors need to do is understand how the money line works.

How is the predicted number of runs figured? Simply by looking at the oddsmaker’s over/under number on the game. For our purposes, let’s say the odds on the game were:

There you have the basics to betting on the National Pastime. Obviously, 1.5 runs is more meaningful in a contest where the oddsmaker is predicting a total of 7 runs to be scored than it is in a game where the predicted total is 14 runs.

Betting the run like makes sense when you like a big favorite and can get them at reduced odds by giving the 1.5 runs.

On the money line, Padres bettors will risk $115 to win $100, while Giants bettors will risk $100 to win $105. But it’s actually quite easy.

The one difference is that in many cases you will have to risk more than the standard -110 used in football and basketball totals when you place a baseball totals bet. If you don’t know anything about over/unders, you’re in luck, as that’s our next topic.

San Diego Padres OV 8.5 -130

San Francisco Giants UN 8.5 +110[

Baseball Overs & UndersIf you’re completely new to overs/unders, more commonly referred to as totals, a good place to get started is here.

Baseball totals are just like the totals for any other sport, in that you’re betting the total number of points (runs in this case) is either over or under the bookmaker’s predicted total.

The reason the odds didn’t change as much for the Padres (-115 to +135) as they did for the Red Sox (-180 to +105) is because the Red Sox are the home team and will not bat in the bottom of the ninth inning if they lead by one run or they will stop batting in the ninth inning if they go ahead by a run, even if the bases are loaded and there are no outs, unless they score by home run.

Looking at another game, this time where the road team is favored, we’ll choose the Padres at the Giants. Bet wisely and remember that it’s a long season and you might be the next gambler to be singing the praises of baseball wagering.

Now, those people betting on the Royals are risking more money than they will win, in this case $125 to win $100, but they are receiving 1.5 runs. On the positive side, there will be cases where you receive favorable odds, such as +120 when you place a toals bet in baseball.

What this means is that bettors wishing to wager more than 8.5 runs will be scored will have to risk $130 to win $100, while those wagering on the under will risk $100 to win $110.

The run line uses a constant spread of 1.5 runs, although on very rare occasions you may see it jump to 2.5 runs. There is no point spread and the odds used for baseball wagering look foreign to them
